10 Summer Titles for Young Readers
While there are countless books releasing in the next few months that we’re excited about, these are some of our most anticipated summer titles for young readers at Eleanor’s Bookshop. All of these books can be purchased at Eleanor’s Bookshop on the southwest corner of 11th and Lewis. The Burning (Young Readers Edition): Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 by Tim Madigan, Adapted by Hilary Beard
As with many other books that have been recently released as a Young Readers Edition, this version of THE BURNING is sure to be an excellent resource for young adults. Last summer, the “remix” of STAMPED by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi took the young reader crowd by storm, and this edition of THE BURNING, which discusses the Tulsa Race Massacre, will do the same this summer. This book is written for young adults – age 12 to 18.

Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean
Another new YA favorite! For fans of THE PRINCESS DIARIES, this novel details the experiences of Izumi, who finds out that she is the daughter of the Crown Prince of Japan during her senior year of high school. Izumi is charming, funny and relatable as she navigates this new life.

Memory Jars by Vera Brosgol
This endearing picture book by Caldecott Honoree Vera Brosgol is full of stunning illustrations and a heartfelt message about “keeping” memories. The sweet relationship between Freda and her Gran will be relatable for young readers who are building or rebuilding relationships with their grandparents after time apart during the pandemic. Great for readers ages 4 to 8.

The Little Blue Bridge by Brenda Maier, illustrated by Sonia Sánchez
The author of award-winning THE LITTLE RED FORT is releasing a bicultural twist on The Three Billy Goats Gruff. This picture book (for ages 4 to 8) teaches confidence and cooperation, while featuring a modern spin on a classic plot.

In LISTEN, the main character goes about her school day while practicing mindfulness. She is surrounded by the noises of busy city streets and her school, yet she seems to experience a peaceful day because of her ability to listen. Readers are encouraged to pay attention to the sounds around them, including sounds from other people, and to experience these sounds with patience and calmness.

Lala’s Words: A Story of Planting Kindness by Gracey Zhang
Gracey Zhang’s debut picture book is about the impact of words that build others up. Not only are little readers encouraged to be patient with others, they are also inspired to motivate others with kindness. The illustrations are reminiscent of those in the ELOISE stories – grand and sweeping yet focused and precious.

Nerdy Babies: Dinosaurs by Emmy Kastner.
The Nerdy Babies are back! This set of board books serves as a great introduction to different STEM fields for littles ones aged 0 to 3. Fans of the series can add to their collection this summer; Nerdy Babies: Transportation is releasing on the same day.

Hardly Haunted by Jessie Sima
The old house in HARDLY HAUNTED wants to become a home. She assumes she is haunted because of her creaky sounds and cobwebs, so she worries that she will never find a family to live there. The voice of the house is sweet and relatable. The story encourages little readers to appreciate themselves for who they are! Perfect to read and reread during the Halloween season.

Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem by Amanda Gorman, illustrated by Loren Long
Amanda Gorman, who served as an inaugural poet in January, is releasing a children’s book that is sure to be a Story Time hit at Eleanor’s! Little readers are challenged to make a difference in the community using their special talents. It will be perfect for kiddos ages 4 to 8. This book is technically releasing in the Fall, but we’ll be thinking about it all summer at Eleanor’s. We just had to include it on the list.
