5 Simple Summer Activities

Beat boredom and have fun!

These five, simple summer activities will delight your kids!

Color Scavenger Hunt

This game is as simple as its name: Create a color swatch by coloring squares on a piece of paper, Bingo-board style. Set a time limit, then send your kids off to find objects matching the colors you’ve chosen!

All you need is:

  • Paper
  • Markers/Crayons
  • Place to roam (i.e. backyard, a park)

Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder

Have young ones who love nature? Show them how they can help feed their neighborhood birds with this easy craft. Save old toilet paper rolls, spread peanut butter around them and roll the peanut buttery tube over a plate of bird feed. Run a piece of string, yarn or fishing line through the roll and knot it at the end. Now all you need to do is find somewhere to hang your bird treat and wait to see who stops by for a snack! You can even make it a game to see what kinds of birds and how many of the same type stop by and keep tally (extra points if a squirrel or something other than a bird nibbles on this treat).

All you need is:

  • Toilet paper/Paper towel rolls
  • String
  • Peanut Butter
  • Bird Feed

Helpful hint – Wild bird feed starts at $2.38 at Walmart

Firefly Glow Jars

One of the most memorable activities of summer is catching fireflies, but why not give them a cool home to live in? During the day, take a glass jar and decorate it with glow-in-the-dark paint. After it dries, the spots and squiggles will make a great glowing home for the jar’s luminescent tenant. Now all you need to do is set the kids loose and see how many lightning bugs they can catch!

All you need is:

  • Glass Jar
  • Glow in the dark paint
  • Nightime supervision and a field, park or backyard

Helpful hint – Glass jars can be found at various stores including Walmart and Michaels for under $3.00. Glow-in-the-dark paint can also be found at Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Dollar Tree.

Pass-the-Water Challenge

For those days when it’s getting almost too hot to go outside, have your kids cool off with this simple game. All you need is water and plastic cups equal to the number of kids who are playing. Make two equal lines side by side and, at your command, have them start the race! The object of the game is to pour as much water in your cup over your head into the cup of the person behind you. The team that has spilled the least amount of water by the time the cup reaches the end of the line wins!

All you need is:

  • Cups
  • Water

Water Balloon Baseball

The name says it all. This game will entertain everyone in your family, no athletic ability required (just maybe some hand-eye coordination). All you need is a water balloon “pitcher” and a willing batter. You can form teams and make up a game that follows the rules of baseball as closely as you want, or you can have fun just taking turns pitching and batting. Regardless, everyone will be soaked and laughing in the end.

All you need is

  • Water balloons
  • A plastic bat

Helpful hint – Plastic baseball bats can be found at Walmart, Target, DICK’s Sporting Goods and other sporting goods stores. Grocery and convenience stores like Walmart and Target will sell water balloons and even water balloon filling kits for around $10.00 or less.
