Leaf Chromatography: Hidden Colors in Leaves

Discover science with Discovery Lab
Kirsten Lang does a leaf chromatography experiment

Why do leaves change color in fall? Even green leaves contain many pigments – you just can’t always see them. With a simple chromatography experiment, you can uncover the hidden colors.

What you will need:

  • Fresh leaves
  • Small jars or cups
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Coffee filters
  • Scissors
  • Warm water bath (bowl of hot water)

Step-by-step

  1. Tear leaves into small pieces and place them in jars.
  2. Add rubbing alcohol and mash leaves gently.
  3. Place jars in a warm-water bath for 30 minutes.
  4. Insert strips of coffee filter so the tips touch the liquid.
  5. Watch as colors climb the paper, then let strips dry.

The science behind it!

Leaves contain chlorophyll (green), carotenoids (yellow/orange), and anthocyanins (red/purple). In summer, green chlorophyll hides the others. Chromatography separates these pigments, revealing the “secret rainbow” inside every leaf.
