We’re Grandparents. Of Course We’re Obsessed With Our Grandkids!

I‘m sure you’ve seen the recent trend of reels on social media that starts with people saying, “We’re X, so of course, we Y!” People classify themselves as part of a group or subculture and then proceed to identify characteristics or behaviors they believe align with that group. The trend began in late 2023 on TikTok and has become popular on all forms of social media. I haven’t seen one on grandparenting yet, but I better jump on this trend immediately. After all, I love being a member of the Grandparents Club!
Here’s my take on the trend.
We’re grandparents. Of course we have car seats in the back seat of our car!
We’re grandparents. Of course we have Disney streaming on our televisions!
We’re grandparents. Of course we are obnoxiously smitten with our grandkids!
We’re grandparents. Of course we have a room set up just for grandkid sleepovers!
We’re grandparents. Of course we step on Legos on midnight trips to the bathroom!
We’re grandparents. Of course our Facebook is flooded with pictures of our adorable grandkids!
We’re grandparents. Of course we have a different set of rules for our grandkids than we did for our kids!
We’re grandparents. Of course we always have a full cookie jar!
We’re grandparents. Of course we have time to listen patiently.
We’re grandparents. Of course we think our grandchildren are the most beautiful, intelligent, and kindest children in the world!
We’re grandparents. Of course we can cut all the sandwiches into star, rainbow, or unicorn shapes!
We’re grandparents. Of course the grandkids can climb in bed with us when they spend the night.
We’re grandparents. Of course we have plenty of energy to play for hours. Then we promptly fall asleep after you leave.
We’re grandparents. Of course we’ll get down on the floor and play even though our knees and back will pay the price later.
We’re grandparents. Of course our grandkids are our favorite topic of conversation!
We’re grandparents. Of course we’re always pleading and bargaining with a higher power to let us live long enough to see the grandkids grow up!
Additional Thoughts on Grandparenting
Another trend is adult kids complaining about how their parents love their grandchildren more than they love their kids. Some of them even complain that they are jealous of their own children! Fortunately, my daughter understands that my love for her children is an extension of my love for her. My devotion to her children gives my daughter the emotional freedom to know that when her children are with me, they are not only safe but also happy and loved.
Grandchildren also serve a vital position in grandparents’ lives. They give us purpose. They give us that beautiful gift of seeing the world through a child’s eyes. They give us pure love, and we give it right back. I’m happy to be part of this privileged subculture of grandparents!
We’re grandparents. Of course we love our grandchildren irrationally and unconditionally.
