Staying Busy at the Start of Summer
We visit Daiso, attend CRSOK's ribbon cutting and more
Summer is off to a busy start, no surprise there! We are planning to have a calmer summer than last year (too many camps got overwhelming.) But this year, we’re starting off with our most energy-intensive camp before taking it easier. So this week has been all about camp, but I wanted to write about some interesting things we’ve done lately.
Daiso Tulsa
Back when I wrote my list of Things to Look Forward to in Tulsa in 2025, Daiso seemed little more than a rumor. But now it’s here! If you’re not familiar with the store, it’s a Japanese-based retailer that is known for carrying a variety of low-cost items. Anything from home decor to craft items, health and beauty products, etc. And in additional to being budget-friendly, a lot of the items are very cute as well.
Tulsa’s Daiso is located in Southroads Shopping Center. It looks like its hours are currently 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily with the exception of Sunday, which is 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Here’s our Daiso haul:
Counseling and Recovery Services Ribbon Cutting
Counseling and Recovery Services just opened a new facility at 71st and Riverside, and I was able to attend the ribbon-cutting and tour the building. I believe I heard from more than one staff member that this new building feels like moving from the ’70s (former location) to modern times. And it really is beautiful. They’ve updated their logo recently, with a bright and fresh-feeling color scheme.
If you’re not familiar with Counseling and Recovery Services (CRS), they serve both adults and children. Their adult services include job and housing help, opioid treatment, counseling, crisis support and more. Children can receive counseling through CRS, transition services for youth ages 17-25, family support, etc. Counseling & Recovery Services also operates the CALM Center and YES Tulsa (crisis intervention for youth), both at a separate location. Also, if you’re in the area, they have a drive-through pharmacy, and you don’t have to be a client to use it.
Zarrow Regional Library
Of course, we had to sign up for the Summer Reading Program! And since we’ve been in West Tulsa this week for camp, we signed up at Zarrow Regional Library. I’d never been there before, and it’s fantastic! Just look at the outside of their storytime room!
The Zarrow Regional Library is also home to the American Indian Resource Center, which “provides cultural, educational and informational resources, activities and services honoring American Indian heritage.” (tulsalibrary.org/locations/visit-the-american-indian-resource-center
The architecture of the building is interesting, and there’s plenty to discovery inside, too. Including some beautiful art, a stained glass mural, a knight in shining armor, cozy fireplace, etc. Hopefully we’ll have time this summer to visit some other new-to-us library branches!
Sadly, we missed the library’s Tie-Dye Party by about ten minutes, but the bison out front was still dressed for the occasion!
