Speeding Through October
I‘ve been somewhat of a humbug this month. October is probably my favorite month (hey, birthday!), and Halloween a favorite holiday. But this year, we have yet to visit a pumpkin patch, and my graveyard yard decor is still in the basement.
In years past, Joss and I have gone trick or treating multiple times leading up to Halloween. We’ve done Brookside BooHaHa, HallowZOOeen, BOOtanical, Philbrook and Meadow Gold District. This year, we’re sticking to Meadow Gold District’s trick or treat event this coming Saturday, I think. And then we’re going to see Clue at Philbrook on Friday, which I’m very excited for! On Halloween night, we’ll probably forego our annual foray into Maple Ridge for some lower-key trick or treating around our neighborhood.
Of course, looking back on the month, we still managed to pack in the fun! Including an amazing quick trip to Kansas City. So, to remind myself that I haven’t entirely let October pass me by, here are some other things we’ve done this month.
1. Trade and Transformation at Philbrook
I got to attend Philbrook’s media preview for their newest exhibition, Trade and Transformation, curated by Kalyn Fay Barnoski, Assistant Curator of Native Art. This is Barnoski’s first major exhibition, and it was very impressive! The exhibition showcases works from Philbrook’s collection, including some truly incredible newer acquisitions. It “explores power, culture, and environment, tracing the transformational qualities of trade across time and the world to reveal connections between people.” This is done in a non-linear way, focusing on the stories and history of each piece, rather than chronology.
The exhibition will be on display through Dec. 30, 2023.
2. Killers of the Flower Moon
On Sunday morning, I went to Circle Cinema to see Killers of the Flower Moon. I hadn’t realized when I bought the ticket that the movie is 3.5-hours long. So keep that in mind when considering when to go. But I think that long run time was necessary to really honor the story and present it in a comprehensive and respectful way. I’d read the book, but seeing the story unfold on screen drives home the horror that must have been experienced by the Osage Nation during the Reign of Terror. The whole audience breathed a sigh of relief when the Bureau of Investigation officers finally showed up to investigate the murders.
I’m not going to review the film, but here is an article from Today.com interviewing some members of the Osage Nation – who were involved in the film – about their thoughts on the movie: today.com/popculture/movies/killers-of-the-flower-moon-osage-nation-members-react-rcna120899
And please read TulsaKids’ interview with Margie Burkhart, granddaughter of Mollie Burkhart (the protagonist of Killers of the Flower Moon). I just re-read it. It was interesting to hear how Leonardo DiCaprio was trying to wrap his head around the fact that his character, Ernest Burkhart, both thought he loved his wife, Mollie, and helped orchestrate the murders of her family and people. From the article:
“’He [DiCaprio] wondered how somebody could love someone and murder the rest of the family. It was hard for him to wrap his head around it,’ [Margie Burkhart] said. ‘I told him that Ernest was so under the influence of his uncle, he would have done anything asked of him.’”
3. Saturdays
Most Saturdays, we are still going to tae kwon do class, followed by lunch at Desi Wok and then some Pokémon TCG at Dragonslayer. This usually ends up taking up a majority of the day – and therefore the weekend. I never liked the thought of committing to a Saturday class, preferring to keep the day open. But I guess times have changed, because this little routine is something I’ve been very grateful for. We go to Desi Wok regularly enough now that the staff knows our order, ha. A shared veggie tikka masala, mild, with regular naan. So good.
Speaking of Pokémon, I’ve been greatly amusing myself lately by painting tiny portraits of Pokémon dressed for trick or treating. It’s my favorite way to be creative. A project that doesn’t have to be taken seriously and can be finished quickly. Now I just have to figure out what to do with 50-or-so of these guys.
Anyway, they may be silly, but it’s been a nice way to feel like I’m not completely neglecting the Halloween season. Now we just have to figure out what Joss is going to be for Halloween!
What fun things have you done this October? Let me know in the comments!
