“Camping Out” at Home: Outdoor and Indoor Slumber Parties
Sponsored by Homma Camp Co.
Slumber parties are a classic childhood experience, and, thanks to Homma Camp Co., planning the perfect slumber party has never been easier! Owner Jessica Brent and her partner started Homma Camp Co. with the goal of making it easy for families to spend time together outdoors. Now, in addition to their camping packages, they offer indoor and outdoor slumber party options, perfect for those looking to make memories closer to home.
“I remember slumber parties as being a time when rules were suspended and secrets were shared,” recalls Brent. “We got to eat junk food and stay up late. When I’m putting together a slumber party experience, my first goal is to take some of the party planning pressure off the parents. Second, I want to create, with the tent, a special kids-only space where they can build on their friendships.”
The indoor slumber party, with individual tents often decorated to a specific theme, is really on-trend right now! Brent believes this is because “camping” indoors frees hosts from worrying about weather forecasts. Even if it’s rainy or 100+ degrees out, an indoor slumber party is still a fun option.
On the other hand, Homma Camp Co.’s outdoor slumber parties are a great choice for older kids who are ready for a little independence. Parents have the option to camp out in their own tent if they prefer.
Planning Your Party
What are the key elements of a successful slumber party? “Snacks and cozy blankets,” says Brent.
When it comes to food, she likes to keep it simple. Homma Camp Co. can provide weenie roast baskets, including hot dogs, buns and condiments, as well as fire pits and s’mores kits. They can also bring extra picnic tables to your party if you need some extra dining space.
Hungry for some entertainment? Homma Camp Co. has an outdoor movie add-on as well. Some parents they’ve worked with will also rent a bounce house or provide their own yard games, like cornhole.
Of course, choosing a fun theme can really take your slumber party to the next level! Currently, Homma Camp Co. offers the following themes:
- Fairy Forest
- Woodland Creatures
- Troop Beverly Hills
- Park Ranger
- Moon and Stars
Each indoor slumber party package comes with individual tents, a sleeping mat, throw blankets, throw pillows, string lights and themed décor. The themed slumber party packages come with fuller styling as well as party favors.
The basic outdoor slumber party package comes with one canvas bell tent outfitted with rugs, a center table, lantern, string lights, pillows and poufs, door mat and camp chairs. You can also choose an upgraded package that includes air mattresses with sheets and throw blankets and an option to upgrade to a themed styling.
Brent says that kids as young as 5 or 6 can enjoy both indoor and outdoor slumber parties, with adult supervision. The typical age for their backyard slumber parties is 8-14, meaning this is a perfect, out-of-the-box activity for your tweens and early teens. Older teens, Brent says, typically want a fuller camping experience rather than the slumber party package.
The Day-Of
Help make your party a success by making sure everyone knows what to expect and what to bring. Kids should bring their own sleeping bag and pillow, as well as PJs and anything they need to feel comfortable overnight, such as a stuffed animal or special blanket.
For indoor slumber parties, Brent says, parents will often assign tents ahead of time, so no one fights over a particular spot.
