Op-Ed: A Growth Year with City Year Tulsa isn’t just an experience; it’s a key to unlocking new potential

Tatiana Sanchez

For many young people, the path after high school isn’t always straightforward. Some are unsure about college. Others want work experience or time to discover what they’re passionate about. That’s why City Year Tulsa offers what we proudly call a “growth year,” an opportunity to develop professionally and personally while giving back to local schools and communities.

A “growth year” isn’t just a gap year to pass the time. It’s a year filled with purpose, learning and impact. Our AmeriCorps members work directly in Tulsa classrooms, supporting students in math, reading and essential life skills. They serve as mentors and role models while supporting teachers in classrooms and are an essential part of school culture. Whether they’re tutoring, leading after-school clubs, attending sporting events or simply being a trusted adult in a student’s life, our AmeriCorps members make a real difference every day.

City Year Tulsa’s AmeriCorps program is designed for young adults, ages 17 to 25, who want to build skills that will serve them in any career. AmeriCorps members receive more than 300 hours of professional development, coaching and career exploration. They join a team of peers with shared values, learning how to adapt, communicate and lead, all while contributing to something bigger than themselves.

One of the things I love most about my role at City Year Tulsa is helping people see what is possible. I once met a high school senior who was unsure about her future, nervous, uncertain and contemplating what to do next. After learning about City Year, she took a chance and applied. It wasn’t always easy, but by the end of her service year, she felt proud, confident and ready to take the next step and go to college, with help from City Year thanks to the education awards we offer.

In fact, one of the most valuable benefits of serving with City Year Tulsa is access to scholarship opportunities. Through partnerships with Tulsa Community College and Oklahoma State University-Tulsa, AmeriCorps members can earn their associate and bachelor’s degrees at significantly reduced tuition rates, saving thousands of dollars on higher education. These partnerships allow corps members to complete an undergraduate degree for a fraction of the typical cost, with some even going on to pursue master’s degrees tuition-free. For many young people who are unsure how they’ll afford college, this pathway makes higher education not only possible but affordable. It’s a powerful way to turn a year of service into a lifetime of opportunity.

If you’re not sure what comes next after high school or college, or you just want to make an impact in our community while figuring it out, City Year Tulsa may be the perfect place to start. The first step is straightforward: reach out, have a conversation and determine if this path feels right for you.

Because a growth year can change everything.
