Adventure Begins at the Library This Summer
Summer Reading Program starts June 1 with EXTRA books, FREE events and FUN prizes!
As any good librarian knows (and I’m a good librarian!), some of the best adventures are reading ones. You get to stay safe in one place while getting the thrill of following fictional or historical characters as they climb mountains, race boats, face insurmountable challenges, get into scrapes and then get out again.
This summer we invite you to all of the Tulsa City-County Library’s 24 locations – and the bookmobile – to start a reading adventure. You’ll also earn great prizes and coupons for food and local recreation.
Here are just a few titles to get you and your child ready for a wonderful reading time this summer:
Big Shark, Little Shark, and the Spooky Cave by Anna Membrino
The cave looks scary, but Little Shark is not afraid! Big Shark, however… Follow along to see what adventures they get into when Big Shark faces its fears.
Lily Leads the Way by Margi Preus
Lily the sailboat is small and wary but must encounter a harbor full of big boats and even bigger ships. Will she find her bravery to get through to the lake? A terrific introduction to ships and boats – if your child enjoys this, traipse over to the 628s in J Nonfiction!
The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza by Mac Barnett
Move over, Garfield! This cat has to blast off into space and catch some rascally rats who are eating the moon! Cat-alog description: “Accompanied by the imperious Moon Queen and LOZ 4000, a toenail-clipping robot, the First Cat in Space journeys across a fantastic lunar landscape in a quest to save the world. Will these unlikely heroes save the moon in time? Can a toenail-clipping robot find its purpose in the vast universe? And will the First Cat in Space ever eat some pizza?”
The Last Last-Day-of-Summer by Lamar Giles
What happens when cousins Sheed and Otto freeze time on the last day of summer? Sure, they get more summer, but what other secrets will they find?
Mighty Jack and Zita the Spacegirl by Ben Hatke
Two mighty fun and mighty adventurous graphic novel characters come together to fight an army of giants bent on destroying the Earth and ending humanity. Will they succeed?
EXTRAS
Summer Reading Program EXTRA: When your child reads their 8 books to complete the Summer Reading Program, encourage them to show off their medal (which they will have earned) to every adult you meet on your excursions around town.
Summer Reading Program EXTRA: Reading the same book again counts. You’ll probably want to encourage reading of many different books, but re-reading is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers and allows them to practice fluency, an important reading skill.
Summer Reading Program EXTRA: Don’t forget nonfiction. Nonfiction books are an excellent way to expand knowledge and help your reader earn their bonus prize for Summer Reading, which they will get by reading a total of 20 books.
