What to Do in Tulsa on a Cold, Rainy Weekend

The weather has been less than stellar lately. We opted for layers and raincoats instead of T-shirts this past weekend. Plans we had to go to one more pumpkin patch quickly dissolved. When I started thinking of where we could have fun inside, it occurred to me how many indoor entertainment options exist in Tulsa. There are tons!
A world-class children’s museum
One of the most obvious choices for children is Discovery Lab, conveniently located by Gathering Place. With so much to learn and explore, it’s a great place for kids to go with a group of friends or meet new kids there. There is seating for parents who want to keep an eye on their children, but also engage with each other.
I believe a membership is well worth it even if you mostly use it for the very cold and very hot months. Discovery Lab is also a popular birthday spot where we’ve attended several well coordinated parties over the past few years. I could write much more about the amazing work being done at Discovery Lab, but I’ll save it for another time.
Action on the ice
If you’re lucky like we were this weekend, the Tulsa Oilers might be playing a home game (or games) at BOK Center. We have a blast at Oilers games. It doesn’t matter where you’re sitting — and we’ve been everywhere from the floor, boxes, to the nosebleed section — the action is contagious.
Not sure if your family will like hockey? You’ll never know unless you try going to a game. Both kids in this house think hockey is the best sport to watch, though neither have played it. Give it a shot and support our local team!
Busting boredom with board games
Keeping the kids away from electronics all day in dreary weather is one of my goals. Recently, we have started seeking out more board games and traditional table games. If you love board games, check out Shuffles Board Game Cafe in downtown Tulsa. You’ll be amazed at their remarkable collection of games. Some are geared toward kids, while others are for adults. I’ll write more about Shuffles in the winter, but check their website for times and events before planning a visit.
Isabelle and I found a place we are enjoying on the opposite side of town (101st and Sheridan to be exact) called Bria’s Italian Ice. They have an assortment of games for kids to enjoy including a foosball table in their party room. Guests can enjoy the space so long as it isn’t reserved at that time. Bria’s offers all-natural Italian ice, and their ice cream is incredible.
So many choices, so little time…
The Tulsa area offers many other boredom busters for rainy days such as Tulsa Air & Space Museum, Oklahoma Aquarium, and Philbrook. Add to this performances by Tulsa Ballet, Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and other groups which can be found on the Tulsa PAC’s website, and you’ll wish you had more time to do it all.
It would be impossible to list every indoor entertainment option in this blog post, but as our family works our way through more indoor options this winter, I will share them with you.
