Three Ways to Celebrate Moms in Tulsa
Much like mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, moms are the powerhouses of families. Whether we’re multijob-juggling machines, hardworking homemakers, generous grandmas, altruistic aunties, or those beautiful souls who don’t have their own kids but still find time to nurture and give to their communities, moms are the best. And with Mother’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to share some of the best ways to celebrate and honor the moms in our community this year.
1. Take all your Momfolk to the Owasso Mom Crawl
The 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Mom Crawl in Owasso’s Redbud District is the ultimate Mom splurge. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, it’s a shopping-infused celebration of all things mom located on one of Oklahoma’s most adorable main streets.
Not only will there be plenty of prizes, yummy treats, and one-of-a-kind gifts, but the Mom Crawl is also a chance to find out what all the hype is about as Owasso, like so many of Tulsa’s suburbs, seems to be well into a cultural renaissance these days. Even better, all the businesses are within walking distance.
And unlike sending Mom flowers or her usual jug o’ perfume, taking her to the Mom Crawl gives her more of what she really wants: time with the family (and gifts — moms really love gifts). It’s also a great way for “sandwich generation” folks to celebrate multiple generations of moms while giving them all the attention they deserve.
How to do it right:
- Start by picking up a BINGO card at The GameDay Spirit Shop, where you can pick up a build-your-own crossbody bag or make something fabulous at their T-shirt bar. If you stop by all the businesses on the BINGO card, you’ll get a chance to win a grand prize Mom will love.
- Stop by the adorable red dirt boho boutique Urban Owasso next since the first 20 paying customers get a free grab bag.
- While you’re there, let your mom squad customize their own charm necklaces at the charm necklace bar or build their own super cute trucker hats from Hat off the Press.
- Make some beautiful keepsakes together at The Copper Kiln ceramic studio — they’re waiving their sitting fee for the event, so you’ll just need to pay for your supplies.
- Stop by Dodwell Designs and sample tasty dips and treats from The Resident Chef, an Arkansas-based gourmet food company.
- Grab lunch (or a little of everything) from celebrated local food trucks like Granny’s Chuckwagon (pulled pork mac ‘n cheese), Fulfilled Coffee Lab, Macronage Sweets and Patisserie, Get Toasted (homestyle French toast), Infused Ice Cream and Cereal Bar (cereal and ice cream, y’all).
- Grab awesome mom deals at shops like the Ollie Pop Craft Shop, Art in Bloom, Rust & Ruffles, and This & That Candles and More.
- Treat your moms to a facial at ASG Skinbar & Studio.
- Pick up all the hot sauce at Fire ‘N the Hole and then send it to your favorite moms and TulsaKids bloggers (I had to try).
- Where the Wild Things Play on Main Street is offering drop-off playtime from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at just $25 for the first kiddo and $20 for each additional sibling — just be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time.
2. Give Mom a stress outlet
School traffic, the rising cost of the groceries kids can’t seem to get enough of for some reason, random dudes on the internet complaining about bears for some reason — us moms might keep it together most of the time, but some of us have plenty of pent-up rage we’re sitting on. And for some moms, the chance to disperse that energy before we go full Karen might just be the ultimate Mother’s Day gift.
Fortunately, the Tulsa metro has a handful of ax-throwing companies where moms can spend the afternoon chucking axes, knives, and throwing stars at a target so they can come home and not scream as they ask their families for the 14th time to just pick up their freaking shoes.
Or try taking Mom to a rage room — a place where she can literally just break things without having to worry about who will clean up the mess. Most of these spots are ages 12 and up, making this a perfect activity for sharing with teens and tweens that doubles as a much-needed reminder that beneath that normcore veneer, Mama’s a stone cold baddie.
Where to go:
- The Smash Room – 9941 E. 21st Street in Tulsa
- Smash Something – 31st and Sheridan in Tulsa
- Got Wood – 103 E. Main in Jenks
- A & R Axes – 71st and Lewis in Tulsa
3. Take Mom to a festival or live music event
I love May in Tulsa because the city starts to come alive with music and arts — and there is plenty of entertainment popping off on Mother’s Day weekend this year. Here’s my favorite list of events coinciding with Mama’s Day in 2024:
- Oklahoma Renaissance Festival at the Castle of Muskogee
- Tulsa Festival of Kites at 43rd and Garnett on May 11-12
- Mayfest in downtown Tulsa
Do you have any big plans for Mother’s Day this year? Let me know in the comment. Remember to give your mom huge hugs (and hot sauce) — and have a wonderfully spicy week in your little nebula.
