They Can Surprise You

Today, I will talk about a couple things the kids and I have enjoyed this summer, and I’ll give you details about my big annual fundraiser coming up this weekend. But first, I must brag on my 14 year old son, Atticus.

Surprised

A week ago, my son and I were at Walmart when we were waiting in the self checkout line. It was a busy day at Walmart, so there were a lot of people. My son was standing with the cart when we heard loud crash.

We all turned to see what the noise was and saw an elderly woman who was in a one of those electric wheelchair shopping carts. She had accidentally bumped into a display of Fourth of July cookies and knocked it down. She was with a young boy, probably around five years old, who was stunned at what just happened. We all were. I started looking around for a Walmart employee to alert them of what just happened but couldn’t find any.

My son Atticus surprised me and immediately said, “Dad, take the cart.” He jumped into action! He walked right over to the pile of cookies and broken display and, along with another stranger, started helping the woman by picking up the cookies and putting the display back together.

As a parent, we try to raise our children to help others and those less fortunate. I almost started tearing up with pride, but had to capture the moment with this picture first.

After he and the other stranger put the display back together, the old woman and young boy looked a bit embarrassed, but definitely very relieved and grateful. My son walked back to me as I was still waiting in line with our groceries. He didn’t say anything. I wanted to make a big deal about how impressed I was that he did that on his own without me saying, “Go help that woman.”

All I said was, proudly, “Good job son.”

He smiled. 🙂 I teared up.

Summer Backyard Parties

Family vacations are great, but I think backyard parties are the best! It’s such a great way to get to know your friends and neighbors! I’m always grateful to those who bravely offer their homes for such chaos.

My daughter’s daycare director selflessly invited the motley crew of 20+ 5-10 year olds to her house and rented a couple inflatable water slides. Her husband grilled some hotdogs and served up snow cones! Below is my daughter and her brother.

Atticus was on water hose duty making sure the slide (and kids) stayed wet.

If this picture doesn’t yell “SUMMER FUN,” then I don’t know what does.

Cowabunga!

This place needs to be on your To Do List this summer. It’s only an hour and 10 minutes from Tulsa and is an inexpensive day trip of exhilarating water fun. It’s called: WOKA whitewater Park. It’s short for: Waters of Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Atticus and I had a blast! There is fun for all levels of skill. We went down the rapids first in inner tubes. Then Atticus exchanged his for a kayak. He had never been in a kayak before, but with the clear instructions from the staff, he was confident and eager to try.

Not me, I stayed in my tube thankyouverymuch. We are definitely going back! visitwoka.com

Cinergy has movies with breakfast!

I took my daughter and her friend Izzy to see “Despicable Me 4” at Cinergy Entertainment at 71st and S. Memorial.

They have a breakfast package that includes a movie, buffet breakfast with donut holes, French toast sticks, juice/coffee, etc. Plus, you get a $10 game card to use in their impressive arcade.

The girls gave the movie a one and a half thumbs up. I fell asleep. In my defense, those leather recliners are soooooooo comfy at Cinergy, PLUS they have seat warmers!

Gridiron

I did not take the kids to the ribbon cutting on the new $17.5 million renovation of Gridiron Sports Bars and Grill. It was where the old Buffett was. Now it’s this incredible sports bar that had the biggest TV monitor I’ve ever seen. AND kids are welcome! My kids are starting to like watching the Dallas Cowboys, so we are definitely going to Gridiron to watch them play!

This is Jerry. See that smile on his face? He’s like that all the time! It’s no wonder it’s his job to make sure that, as a guest at River Spirit Casino, you are always smiling, too!

Red Dirt Driller

I have dressed up the Golden Driller at a Red Dirt Driller for our new T-shirt design because my Tulsa Rocks Podcast is raising money for the Red Dirt Relief Fund. reddirtrelieffund.org

They help Oklahoma musicians who are down on their luck. They started during the pandemic when all musicians were hiring for income. They have helped so much, they kept it going.

So, please meet me at Los Cabos in Broken Arrow this Saturday (July 13) at 6:00 p.m. We will have three red dirt bands on their new patio stage, plus you can bid on autographed guitars from Night Ranger and more! Also a Bret Michaels (of Poison) signed rock n roll cowboy hat. And other fun prizes including SOLD OUT VIP tickets to Rocklahoma or Born and Raised Festival.
