Storytime for Grownups
Storytime for Grownups meets on the second Friday of each month at Central Library
You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll eat snacks. Most importantly, you’ll add to your ever-growing “Books to Read” list.
Sound appealing? Then don’t miss Central Library’s Storytime for Grownups, a relatively new program that began in October 2018. Storytime for Grownups meets on the second Friday of each month from 12:15-1 p.m., making it the perfect lunchtime getaway. Each month features a different theme and readers from the community. TulsaKids Editor Betty Casey and I attended the very first Storytime for Grownups–spooky stories in October!–and loved it so much we haven’t missed a meeting yet!
I don’t know what it is about being read to–or maybe it’s just a strength of good literature–but other than the Halloween storytime, I think I’ve teared up at least once every time. “Gift of the Magi” at December’s event really got to me!
January’s Storytime for Grownups was all about “New Beginnings.” The first reader read a story from Maya Angelou’s book “Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now,” about how her grandmother forged her own path after a divorce: Instead of doing domestic work, she began selling homemade meat pies to nearby factory workers, an enterprise that eventually grew into a storefront and thriving small business. Next, we heard a hilarious excerpt from “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” Finally, a powerful, inspiring letter John Lewis wrote to his younger self, as found in “Note to Self: Inspiring Words from Inspiring People,” complied by Gayle King.

While listening to these works, we snacked on Trader Joe’s nibbles and drank Starbucks beverages (arrive early so you have time to pay a visit to the cafe!). It was so relaxing.
