So, We Did A Thing

I haven’t talked much about religion or politics in my blog, but believe me, I think about it a lot. And I won’t talk about it much today either, but I just have to tell you about a thing my kids and I did the other weekend.

Delmar O’Donnell: “The preacher says all my sins is warshed away, including that Piggly Wiggly I knocked over in Yazoo.” – O, Brother, Where Art Thou, 2000

My father was an ordained minister. He officiated over my twin sister’s first marriage. He swore he would not marry any of his other kids. Although, after much persistence, he agreed to also officiate over my wedding in 2015.

My mother was very religious and always made sure us kids went to church every week and prayed every day. Although, as time went by and I moved out on my own, I lost my religious discipline.

Once I had children, I thought about getting them baptized. Then it dawned on me, I couldn’t remember being baptized myself. My son goes to church every week at boarding school. He has been asking about getting baptized for a while, so I inquired at our church, Life.Church, Midtown, and they just so happened to have a ceremony scheduled the weekend before he went off to school.

I was pleasantly surprised when he said he would like me and his sister to do it with him.

After discussing it with Life.Church, they said I could be a part of my kids’ ceremony so, of course, I was happy to oblige.

Both my kids’ mothers were there, and it was a very beautiful and righteous moment. Amen.
