It’s Time for Spooky Month TV Watch Parties

I have to admit that I dragged out all of my Halloween decorations around the second week of September. Think of it as my way of summoning the leaves and cooler weather for what is objectively the best time of year in Oklahoma. And as I bask in the glow of my apple pie candles and the skull lights on my Halloween tree, I can’t wait to kick off one of my family’s very favorite Spooky Month traditions: Halloween watch parties.

Over at my other writing job at Looper.com, horror movies and television are listed as two of my official areas of expertise. By the time Halloween rolls around each year, I’ve usually added to both my long list of scary movie faves and my ever-growing list of movies I want to check out but haven’t had a chance to yet.

To help you kick off the season of crunchy leaves and front porch pumpkins, I’m sharing some of my favorite ideas for spooky month TV show watch parties you can enjoy with your teens this year.

Silly Spooky

Psych Watch Party

Psych is one of the cleanest, funniest shows I know of. It’s also so full of hilarious running gags and pop culture references that it has a huge cult following. The show was known for doing Halloween episodes, and the cozy mystery format of the show makes it easy to watch without knowing the back story.

Snacks for a Psych-O-Ween watch party:

Episodes to watch:

  • “Scary Sherry: Bianca’s Toast” (Season 1, Episode 15)
  • “Shawn (And Gus) of the Dead” (Season 2, Episode 16)
  • “Ghosts” (Season 3, Episode 1)
  • “Tuesday the 17th” (Season 3, Episode 15)
  • “The Devil is in the Details and in the Upstairs Bedroom” (Season 4, Episode 4)
  • “Let’s Get Hairy” (Season 4, Episode 8)
  • “In Plain Fright” (Season 5, Episode 11)
  • “This Episode Sucks” (Season 6, Episode. 3)
  • “Heeeeeere’s Lassie”  (Season 6, Episode 11)
  • “100 Clues” (Season 7, Episode 5)
  • “A Nightmare on State Street” (Season 8, Episode 9)

A Little Scary

The X-Files Watch Party

The X-Files are always a great go-to for spooky, ambient TV viewing. Even if you’ve never seen the show and aren’t familiar with the rather complicated lore iceberg, the show has plenty of monster-of-the-week episodes. Some are hilarious, others are bloody terrifying, and a few are a little of both.

Snacks for an X-Files watch party:

  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pizza with green peppers, mushrooms, and pepperoni
  • Banana cream pie
  • Sweet potato pie

Episodes to watch:

  • “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” (Season 3, Episode 4)
  • “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space” (Season 3, Episode 20)
  • “Bad Blood” (Season 5, Episode 12)
  • “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster” (Season 10, Episode 3)
  • “Rm9sbG93ZXJz” (Season 11, Episode 7)

Supernatural Watch Party

Saving people, hunting things. It’s the family business! And all you need is a little rock salt and some decent snacks to get started.

Snacks for a Supernatural watch party:

Episodes to watch:

  • “Everybody Loves a Clown” (Season 2, Episode 2)
  • “Tall Tales” (Season 2, Episode 15)
  • “Malleus Maleficarum” (Season 3, Episode 9)
  • “Mystery Spot” (Season 3, Episode 11)
  • “Monster Movie” (Season 4, Episode 5)
  • “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester” (Season 4, Episode 7)
  • “I Believe the Children Are Our Future” (Season 5, Episode 6)
  • “Scoobynatural” (Season 13, Episode 16)
