Setting the Stage for Success: How One Tulsa Mom Keeps Mornings Magical

Mornings can be a whirlwind for any family, but they also hold the key to setting the tone for a child’s entire day. A consistent morning routine provides comfort and stability, teaching children valuable life skills like time management, adaptability and self-discipline. Ariel Faulk, a Tulsa mom, founder of Black Moms of Tulsa and youth advocate, shares how she balances the chaos and finds joy in her mornings with her kindergartener, Eleanor.
Mornings with Magic
For Ariel and Eleanor, the day starts with heartfelt rituals. “Each morning, I hear my daughter, Eleanor, and her little footsteps running to embrace me with a long, gentle hug. That melts my heart,” Ariel shares.
After this sweet start, they recite gratitudes and affirmations together. These affirmations, such as “I’m intelligent, beautiful, strong, a leader, kind, loved and valued,” are tools Eleanor uses to command her day confidently. “I love seeing the boost in confidence right at the start of her day,” Ariel says. These small but powerful practices create a foundation of positivity and self-belief, crucial building blocks for children.
Kindergarten Chronicles
Ariel’s mornings are anything but predictable.
“Kids are hilarious! Especially at the age of 5,” she says with a laugh. From surprise games of hide-and-seek to Eleanor waking up with a cheeky “Boo!” when they’re pressed for time, every day is an adventure. These lighthearted moments remind Ariel to embrace the unpredictable nature of childhood. “I love it. It keeps me on my toes and makes mornings fun,” she says.
Snack and Style Secrets
Packing lunches and coordinating outfits can be challenging, but Ariel has found her groove.
“I’m definitely a Pinterest Mom,” she admits. Nutrition is a top priority, with plenty of berries and immune-boosting snacks in Eleanor’s lunchbox.
As for outfits, Eleanor’s school uniform simplifies the morning hustle, but Ariel shares that her daughter’s accessory game is unmatched.
“When I say Eleanor has over 300 hair bows and accessories, I’m not kidding. She always accessorizes,” she says. Free dress days are Eleanor’s favorite, allowing her to express herself. “Honestly, that girl has good taste!” Ariel adds.
Mom Superpowers
Juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, Ariel swears by one golden rule: consistency.
“Kids thrive with set routines,” she says. Even as a homeschooling mom, Ariel maintained structured mornings, proving that organization is her secret weapon.
Her advice to other moms? “Once a parent sets routines and is consistent, everything starts to fall into place naturally,” she says.
With her organized approach and love for planning, Ariel has mastered balancing her busy life while keeping mornings manageable.
Lessons from a Little One
Children often teach parents as much as they learn from them. For Ariel, Eleanor’s wisdom and boundless energy have been transformative. “She told me, ‘Mommy, everything doesn’t have to be perfect,’” Ariel recalls.
This simple yet profound statement encouraged Ariel to loosen her grip on perfectionism and embrace the joy of flexibility. Now, she approaches each day with her daughter’s enthusiasm and a renewed willingness to go with the flow.
Screen Time Savvy
When it comes to technology, Ariel strikes a balance.
“Eleanor does have an iPad, but I only allow her to use it for reading or learning apps like Khan Academy,” she explains. This thoughtful approach ensures that screen time is productive and enriching.
While Eleanor reads during breakfast, Ariel gets a few moments to handle chores or—moms, you’ll appreciate this—even use the restroom in peace.
“It’s all about balance and intentional use,” Ariel says.
