Generations of Cowboys Fans

How ‘Bout Them Cowboys!

Well, we can all agree they are terrible, that’s how ‘bout them Cowboys.

I’m not going to talk about how gut-wrenching the game was for us Cowboys fans to watch (Cowboys 38, Packers 46), but rather today I am going to turn a lemon into lemonade.

Three Generations of Cowboys Fans

Ever since I can remember, my dad (and his whole side of our family) was a Dallas Cowboys fan. As a little kid it was funny watching him get so worked up when they scored. That, of course, got me excited, thus a new generation of Cowboys fan was born.

Having grown up in NW Ohio, it wasn’t always easy. My best friends were either Browns or Steelers (the worst!) fans. But, my twin sister, Lynda, and older brother, Roy, were always rooting for the Cowboys. Those Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman years made it easy, not so much the Troy Aikman of 1989.

And even though my dad left our household in the mid ’70s, he was always a phone call away after each game to go over some post game analysis.

Later in life when I actually lived in Dallas I made sure to always call him at halftime, especially when I was AT the game! He loved knowing that I was such a big fan, because like most little boys, I wanted to grow up big and strong, just like him, which also meant cheering on the Cowboys! And I did. He had his faults, but, he did a good job helping raise me.

You may remember my blog from Thanksgiving 2022, when I took my kids to their first Dallas Cowboys game. Angel was 8 and Atticus was 12. They aren’t as big of fans as I am, but they are getting there! Especially now since they are meeting friends their age that are also fans. My kids are being raised much closer to Dallas than I was, so there are many fans in our area..

I have a friend who has season tickets, and at the last minute he was unable to go to the Cowboys/Packers playoff game, so he asked if I’d like them. “Uh, yeah!” I shouted! The Cowboys were supposed to win by at least 7 points, but by halftime it was 27-7, Green Bay. And it didn’t get much better in the second half. The final score was Dallas 32, Green Bay 48. Dallas got their butts whooped in front of their hometown crowd, a terrible way to end a promising season.

However, memorable moments come in all sorts of ways. Thanks to my friend with the tickets, and my friend in Dallas that let us stay with him after the game, my son Atticus and I had a wonderful bonding moment.

But wait, there’s more!

If you recall, a couple blogs ago, my dad passed away in September. He never got to take me to a game, so I took him. Three generations of Hernandez men were finally at a Dallas Cowboys game together.
