Father’s Day 2025: Can’t Go Wrong with Pizza!

I wanted to check in after Father’s Day and ask you how yours was. Mine was great!

First, I slept in. Then I picked up my daughter for our Dad’s Day visitation, then we went into work for a little bit. Yes, I work on the weekends, too. You’d think on a special day like Father’s Day I wouldn’t want to go into work, but when you love doing what you do like I do, it’s really not work. In fact, being a radio DJ, it’s even more fun to do in on a holiday because I am so curious to hear how YOUR day is going and share it with our 103.3 The Eagle radio audience.

When you’re the new guy on the radio, you usually have to put in weekend and overnight hours, plus holidays. I remember one year when I was on the radio in Dallas, my program director asked for volunteers to work on New Year’s Eve, and I shot my hand up right away. The other DJs looked at me kind of funny wondering why I would want to work on New Year’s Eve leading up to midnight, but I had done that many times and in fact loved talking to all the listeners and seeing what they are up to. Some were just taking it easy at home, while others were at New Year’s Eve parties watching the ball drop in Times Square and other ball drops around the world. I would always take a bottle of champagne with me and pop it open at midnight and toast with all of our listeners.

And the same applies to Father’s Day this year. It was great to hear other dads’ stories about their own fathers and how they now celebrated with their kids.

When I was done with work, we went home and relaxed a little bit before getting ready to go out to dinner. My first thought was to go to one of my favorite places to eat and drink. Whenever I have someone visiting from out of town, I always take them there. I’ve often thought if I opened up my own restaurant/drinking establishment it would be a lot like this place, Elgin Park Pizza.

I have been in there before on a really nice day when they open up those giant garage door windows and there’s a baseball game going on at one ONEOK Field. It’s just the coolest feeling hearing all those great sounds of summer, and they have some of the best thin crust pizza around. Oh and their craft beer is pretty darn good, too!

I’ve had guys tell me that they have been listening to me on the radio their whole lives. They used to call in on Father’s Day to request a song for their dad. And now they have a son of their own who calls me and requests a song for them on Father’s Day!

Wow! How cool is that?

Alas, we ended up not going to Elgin Park Pizza. We ended up spending more time at my work than I thought and, since I had to have my daughter back to her mother by 7 p.m., we did not have enough time to go downtown. Since her mother lives in Bixby, I thought instead we could try one of my other favorite pizza places (for some reason I had a craving for pizza), so I thought we would go to the pizza shop in Bixby. I haven’t been there in years, but they keep posting pictures on Facebook, so it was an idea that I was salivating over. But when we got there, we discovered that it was closed.

Not sad at all because another pizza place that I love is in South Tulsa, and that is Savastano‘s on South Memorial. I haven’t been there in years, either, but at least they were open and luckily we got there before they had a big dinner rush. Although it took way too long for the pizza to finally get to our table, as always, it was so dang good!

Afterwards, we headed back to my daughter’s mother to drop her off, then my son and I went back to our house in East Tulsa and watched a movie and chilled out for the rest of the evening.

All in all, a really great Father’s Day.

And I hope yours was, too.

So now my next family kind of holiday will be me and my twin sister’s birthday on August 7!
