Eating Scorpion Pizza at the Tulsa State Fair
The things we do for clicks! Have you ever eaten an insect, on purpose? I wish I could say I haven’t. More about that, plus pictures from Tulsa State Fair in today’s Dads Rock Blog!
Scorpion Pizza!
I hope you are enjoying the 11 days of awesome. There has not been many years where the fair has seen zero rain, so I’m sure this year they will be counting money for days.
My son Atticus has only missed one day of the fair so far. He got a Mega Ride Pass at the beginning of the fair, and it definitely has paid itself off. However, it’s the food and drinks and everything else that puts a significant dent in dad’s wallet! Every nights it’s been, “Dad, can I please have $15 for something to eat? I’ll mow the yard tomorrow !” Or, “Dad, can I please have $20 for an Uber ride home? My friends I thought were giving me a ride, left. Please? I’ll mow the yard tomorrow !”
Guess whose yard still hasn’t been mowed.
I can’t go to the fair and not eat a bunch of food. My favorite are Moink Balls, which are bacon-wrapped meatballs, dipped in barbecue sauce, on a stick.I get those every year at the Tulsa State Fair. I heard the deep fried pumpkin pie is good, too, so if I make it back to the fair this weekend, I will definitely try it.
I never thought I would try pizza with actual scorpions on it, but when my Tulsa Rocks podcast cohost, Jill Munroe, and I ate pizza with crickets on it two summers ago, the video got so many views that I thought it would be worth trying the scorpions this year. Here is the video and be forewarned, it is pretty gross. I did not expect it to be so crunchy. Next summer we will have to try the mealworms. I’m not even sure what a mealworm is, but a worm is a worm and should not be on a pizza. So, of course, I’m going to have to try it, record it on video, and let you watch it.
Kids and the Fair
My son, Atticus, is 15 and loves going to the fair because a bunch of his friends go, and they are old enough that I just drop him off and let them run amok. It’s his time to try his Riz with the girls and believe me, when he comes home, he goes straight to bed and is sleeping like a frozen corn dog on a stick all night.
My 11 year-old daughter, Angel, is not so keen on the fair. We went on Sunday with her friend who seemed to have a great time. The fair food and people watching are my favorite things. I do not and will not wait in a line longer than a half hour, which seems to be most of the lines when we go. Jill Munroe had a great idea: If you can go during the week during the day when most people are at work or school, that is when you can get on the rides much faster. About the only ride I will wait in line for that long is the Ferris wheel and the swings.
I don’t really care much for the roller coasters and definitely not the rides that spin you around really fast. I get super dizzy, and it honestly ruins the whole day for me. So I’ve learned not to even attempt those. One of these years I wanna ride the Mach 3 extreme ride! Have you ever ridden that? I’m really bummed that they got rid of the Sky Ride; that, too, was one of my favorite things, especially at night for the view. The bird’s eye view was super cool, and I always got great video of the bands on stage from up there.
One trick I’ve done for many years whenever the kids and I go to a really big place with a whole lot of people is that, as soon as we get there, I take a full body picture head to toe that clearly shows their hair, color, clothes, and whatever else that distinguishes them in case we get separated. I can immediately forward that picture to security or a police officer. Here’s the picture I took this year of my daughter, Angel, and her friend.
I hope you have fun if you go out to the fair on this final weekend. One thing I did not realize that somebody told me yesterday is that the same food can be a different price depending on where you go. A corn dog out by the rides on the Midway can be more expensive than a corn dog inside the Expo Square, so I will definitely have to take advantage of that. I love the displays inside the Expo Square, and one of my favorite things to do is walk around even though I can’t afford some of these giant playscapes, hot tubs or massage chairs. It’s still fun to look at them.
Seeing live local bands is always a fun thing for me to do since I love live music. Here’s a cool Tulsa rock band at the Beir Garden called Steel Roses:
Here are some friends of mine hosting the Hard Rock display with fun giveaways! And I happen to be wearing my Hard Rock Classic Concert Crew T-shirt!
