Drop A Rock Day

Did you know that July 3 is International Drop a Rock Day? It sounds pretty cool, but what exactly is it, you might wonder. I learned about this special day from the fantastic folks at Tulsa Master Gardeners, an OSU Extension Program, who have dropped rocks at their 15th street location so that kids can come and select one on and after July 3.

Drop a Rock Day encourages people to decorate rocks with inspiring messages or creative designs and then leave rocks in public places for others to find. This unofficial holiday was founded in 2015 by the Word Rocks Project with the aim of spreading kindness and creating connections among people worldwide. Participants engage in activities such as designing rocks with positive words or images, hiding these rocks in parks, trails, or other accessible locations.

The painted rocks at the Tulsa Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden at 4116 E. 15th Street in Tulsa are in easy-to-find locations so that the gardens won’t be damaged. Whether simple or highly detailed, all of the rocks are special, and each seems to tell its own story. My daughter’s favorite rock had a picture of a meadow. My favorite rock had an opossum on it. Your child will love selecting a mini masterpiece! It may also inspire painting rocks around your own home.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to visit the Demonstration Garden — a place my family hadn’t visited until now. We are so glad to know it exists. It is a serene setting run by volunteers where you can get ideas for your own home garden, go to meditate, or pack a lunch and enjoy the flowers out there. If you have questions about gardening, the nice people at the garden are happy to answer them. I am so glad to know that such an amazing resource exists.

If you have a question for a Master Gardener, you can also scroll to the bottom of their website and submit a question through the online form. If your family loves flowers, this is a must-see place in addition to other locations in town such as Tulsa Botanic Garden and Philbrook that are known for beautiful blooms. As it is certainly hot out there right now, I highly suggest going earlier in the day to beat the heat!

If you do go, I’d love to see pictures of the special rock you selected! Use the hashtag #DropARockDay and #Tulsa_Master_Gardeners. Have fun!
