Father’s Day Traditions

How was your Father’s Day?
My kids and I went out to dinner. We don’t go out to dinner much these days because it’s too expensive, but I wanted to splurge, so we went to Freeway Cafe on 31st & Yale.
You may have read in my previous blogs that that is where my son had his first job.
While I was deciding where to go for my Dad’s Day dinner, I saw a post on Facebook that Freeway Cafe had a special. My daughter, Angel, and I by chance drove by there the other day and she said, “Hey! Freeway! We haven’t been there in a long time. I used to love that place.”
That was enough for me to pick Freeway. Plus, we haven’t been there since they (for reasons they still haven’t said) just stopped putting my son on the schedule last summer. Since then he got a great job at Cavender’s Western Wear, which he loves much more. Atticus has become quite the fan of new country music, so it fits him perfectly.
We still love the food at Freeway, and the staff is always so friendly! Although one of the waitresses (or managers) was walking around on her phone the whole time we were there, which kinda shocked me. The steak was maybe a bit stringy and lacking taste; I’m more of a chicken fried steak guy, but that wasn’t on special.
It was fun to watch Atticus reminisce. As soon as we walked in there, his eyes lit up with memories rushing through his head of waiting on customers, joking with the cooks, mopping the floors, etc. It was only a year ago since he worked there, but to a 16-year-old, that’s a long time. When you get older the years tend to fly by, am I right?
I think that’s one of the most wonderful things about being a parent, watching your kids grow not only physically but mentally.
Do you remember your first job? And have you been back? I have, and my feelings of nostalgia were of wonderment, pride, and a little “Man, I’m glad that’s over!”
I could almost see the moment we walked in the restaurant, Atticus feeling more mature and proud. Like, “Ah man, I remember this place.”
It made my Father’s Day so very special. And do you know what? We made it almost through the whole meal before everyone got out their phones! I’d call that a successful Father’s Day. I hope yours was as blessed as mine.
