Break Out of the Sandwich Rut: 20 Easy School Lunch Ideas

Packing a lunch isn’t hard. What’s hard is doing it every day. Especially once the early-August enthusiasm wears off and you find yourself staring into the fridge, wondering if baby carrots and goldfish count as a meal.
If you’re the kind of parent who cuts sandwiches into woodland animal shapes and adds edible flowers—please keep doing that (and send us photos!). But if you’re just trying to keep things fresh and edible, we’ve got you. Here are some easy lunchbox ideas that feel fresh but don’t take fancy ingredients or a free afternoon to pull off.
1. Bagel “Sushi” Rolls
Spread a whole wheat tortilla with cream cheese, sprinkle with Everything Bagel seasoning, and layer smoked turkey and spinach. Roll tightly and slice into pinwheels. Pack with grapes and mini pickles.
2. Apple Nachos
Core and slice apples, then sprinkle with granola, mini chocolate chips and a drizzle of peanut butter (thinned with a little water). Wrap the apple slices separately so they don’t brown too quickly.
3. DIY Pizza Lunchables
Pack mini naan or English muffin halves, a small container of pizza sauce, shredded cheese and sliced pepperoni or veggies. Kids can assemble them cold or microwave them at school if allowed.
4. Greek Yogurt Parfait Jars
In a small mason jar or sealed cup, layer Greek yogurt, berries and granola (keep granola in a separate container to add later). Pair with hard-boiled eggs or trail mix for protein.
5. Pasta Bento Box
Toss short pasta (like farfalle or penne) with pesto or olive oil and parmesan. Add sides like cherry tomatoes, cucumber coins and a cookie.
6. Cottage Cheese Snack Box
Pack cottage cheese with diced peaches or pineapple on the side. Round it out with whole grain crackers and turkey slices.
7. Edamame and Rice Bowl
Mix cooked rice with shelled edamame, a little soy sauce and sesame seeds. Add carrot ribbons and a clementine.
8. Protein Waffle Sandwich
Make or buy protein waffles, then sandwich with nut butter and sliced banana. Wrap in parchment or foil so it stays together.
9. Cheesy Veggies Quesadilla Dippers
Spread a tortilla with cream cheese or refried beans, layer with spinach, shredded cheese and another tortilla. Cook, slice into strips and pack with salsa.
10. Sunflower Butter Snack Pack
Sunflower seed butter is a great, safe choice for nut-free classrooms. Make a snack pack with it, pretzel sticks, sliced cucumbers and a small square of dark chocolate.
11. Breakfast Burrito Bites
Scramble eggs with shredded cheese and salsa. Spoon into mini flour tortillas, fold and slice in half. Wrap in foil and they’ll be just fine at room temp until lunch.
12. Zucchini Muffins and Cheese Cubes
Pair a homemade or store-bought zucchini muffin with cubes of cheddar cheese, baby carrots and a handful of trail mix.
Zucchini Muffins
- 1 cup grated zucchini
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup canola oil
- ¼ cup honey or maple syrup
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- Mix wet ingredients and zucchini, then stir in dry ingredients. Bake in a greased muffin pan at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.
13. Caprese Pasta Salad
Toss cooked pasta with cherry tomatoes, mozzarella pearls, chopped spinach and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It’s just as good cold.
14. Wafflewiches
Use mini frozen waffles (toasted and cooled) as sandwich bread. Spread with peanut butter or sunbutter and jam or cream cheese. Add sliced strawberries for a sweet touch. Wrap tightly to prevent sogginess.
15. Mashed Sweet Potato Bowl
Scoop mashed sweet potato into a small container. For a savory version, top with shredded chicken, black beans, bacon or cheese. For a sweet one, top with cinnamon, maple syrup, granola or a few mini marshmallows.
16. Roll-Up “Sushi” Sandwiches
Flatten sandwich bread with a rolling pin. Spread with cream cheese and thin-sliced ham or turkey. Roll tightly, then slice into bite-sized rounds. Serve with apple slices.
17. Banana Oat Cookies
These soft cookies are just sweet enough for lunch—and filled with whole ingredients.
Banana Oat Cookies
- 2 ripe bananas
- 1 cup oats
- ¼ cup chocolate chips
- Mash bananas and stir in oats and chips. Scoop onto baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes.
18. Next-Day Fried Rice
Make extra fried rice at dinner for lunch the next day. Pack warm in a thermos with a side of edamame or sliced cucumber.
19. Ham, Cheese and Pickle Roll-Ups
Lay a slice of deli ham flat, top with a slice of cheddar and a thin dill pickle spear. Roll up tightly and slice into pinwheels. Add pretzels and a fruit pouch for a well-rounded lunch.
20. Cream Cheese and Cucumber Tea Sandwiches
Bring a fancy tea party vibe to lunchtime with these cute little bites. Spread cream cheese on soft white sandwich bread, add thin cucumber slices, then trim crusts and cut into squares or triangles. Pack with blueberries and a handful of snack mix.
