MLK, Jr. Commemoration Society to award $11,000 in scholarships, encourages students to apply by May 7
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Society will be awarding $11,000 in scholarships to six Tulsa-area students enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution – a college, university, or vocational technical school – for the 2021-2022 academic year. The scholarships are an annual community outreach activity associated with the Tulsa MLK Parade. This year’s parade on January 18, 2021, was the 42nd anniversary of the event, and was part of a weeklong celebration of Dr. King’s legacy.
Six scholarships will be awarded as follows:
- $3,500 – Servant Leader
- $2,500 – Change Maker
- $1,500 – Mountain of Hope
- $1,500 – Drum Major of Justice; and
- $1,000 – Beloved Community (2 scholarships).
The scholarship application is available at https://www.mlktulsa.com. Applications will be evaluated by an independent panel, with final selections made by the MLK Commemoration Society Board of Directors based upon the following criteria:
- Academic Achievement: based on the student’s official transcript and grade point average;
- Leadership & Accomplishments: participation in extracurricular activities, honors and awards;
- Work/Volunteer experience;
- Community Involvement; and
- Essay (350-750 words) related to the student’s perceptions of Dr. King’s legacy.
The application deadline is May 7, 2021. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 1, 2021. Scholarships will be distributed after the MLK Commemoration Society has received validation of the applicant’s enrollment in a post-secondary education institution. The deadline for post-secondary educational institution enrollment is August 1, 2020 or the scholarship will be forfeited. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Society, Inc. is a Tulsa, Oklahoma-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization focused on honoring and preserving the works and ideals that Dr. King practiced.
