Upcoming events and organizations to support




September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, 15,780 children under 21 in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year, and childhood cancer is "the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 4 and 14 after unintended fatal accidents." 

If you want to join the fight against childhood cancer, here are some upcoming events you can participate in. (If you know of others, please email tara.rittler@gmail.com with details): 

Gold4Kids Walk & 5K

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 8; on-site registration opens at 7:30 a.m., activities begin at 8 a.m., and the 5K begins at 8:30 a.m.
  • Where: River West Festival Park, 2100 S. Jackson Ave. 

The Gold4Kids Walk and 5K is Gold4Kids Cancer Foundation of Tulsa's major annual fund raiser.  It is a day of celebration and remembrance. Runners and walkers are encouraged to form teams and raise money to support Gold4Kids' mission to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for childhood cancer.  The teams who raise the most money will be recognized at a ceremony. Joy in the Cause 5K

  • When: Friday, Sept. 14, 5-10 p.m.
  • Where: River West Festival Park, 2100 S. Jackson Ave. 

Join Joy in the Cause on September 14, 2018 for the 3rd Annual Joy In The Cause 5K Run. Enjoy live music, local food trucks, team challenges, and an all-new Village of Causes at our End-of-Summer Bash at River West Festival Park . Participants in the One Mile Fun Run or the 5K (3.1 mile) can register to race and receive the 2018 custom-designed Rustic Cuff! A Virtual Run is available if you are not able to join us in person. OSU Coaches vs. Cancer Birthday Bash

  • When: Sunday, Sept. 16, 2-4 p.m.
  • Where: Gallagher-Iba Arena, 200 Athletic Center, Stillwater

The American Cancer Society is the official sponsor of birthdays, and what better way to celebrate than a big ole birthday bash with a posse of Cowboys! The event is open to children who are battling, or who have battled, cancer.

Join the OSU family, including Voice of the Cowboys, Dave Hunziker, a variety of athletes and coaches, the OSU Spirit Squad, and our beloved mascot, Pistol Pete, for an afternoon of games, fun, and birthday cake!

St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 22; Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., run starts at 8:30 a.m.
  • Where: ONEOK Field, 201 N. Elgin Ave. 

Register, form a team, and invite your friends and family to join. Or, join an existing team. Then, be a fearless fundraiser for the kids of St. Jude.

  • Walk: ages 6 and up $10
  • 5K Run: ages 6 and up $20
  • Ages 5 and under free

Joy in the Adventure Angel Car Cruise

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 29, 2-5 p.m.
  • Where: Huber Wraps/Synergy Motorworks, 6820 E. 41st St. 

The second annual Joy in the Adventure Angel Car Cruise, hosted by Huber Wraps and Synergy Motorworks, is a classic car show for a good cause. In addition to seeing some unique automobiles, attendees can enjoy food trucks and an opportunity to meet Mavis Pearl. Car Show participants have the opportunity to win trophies. Learn more here

LLS Light the Night Walk

  • When: Friday, Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: River West Festival Park, 2100 S. Jackson Ave. 

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk funds treatments that are saving the lives of patients today. LLS is making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere. And it's all happening now. Not someday, but today. Each year friends, families and coworkers form teams to raise money in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission. Learn more and register at www.lightthenight.org
