Buddy Bookworm's Thoughts:

Join TCCL’s Rockin’ 2018 Summer Reading Program

My library friends and I have spent the winter preparing for the best summer reading program, ever!

Well, they did the hard work like scheduling educational entertainment, planning hundreds of family programs and selecting fun prizes to give away. I mostly read and snacked.

Now it’s time to get down to serious fun. Look for me visiting libraries and community events all over Tulsa County to keep that reading enthusiasm going strong all summer. You can keep up with my reading hijinks by visiting my Twitter account, https://twitter.com/mybuddybookworm.

Parents and grandparents know that “Libraries Rock!” and by joining the summer reading program, children will acquire this same fondness for literacy.

The annual program is ongoing May 29-Aug. 4 and is filled with free programs and chances to earn great prizes. To sign up, children and teens, newborn to 17, and adults can register at any Tulsa City-County Library or online at www.TulsaLibrary.org/summer.

The program goes beyond the books by offering hundreds of family programs to expand the imagination. Performers and presenters from Tulsa and across the U.S. participate to help bring books to life. Children, as well as adults, will enjoy performances from Sugar Free Allstars, Mr. Stinky Feet, Monty Harper, Lucky Diaz, Tommy Terrific, magicians and many more entertaining and educational performers.

By visiting the library four times and reading eight books, children will earn a medal of achievement and a coupon booklet for free food and entertainment. By reading a total of 20 books, children will earn a bonus prize: birth to pre-K receive a plush animal rattle and children in kindergarten-5th grade receive an inflatable guitar.

Food and entertainment coupons include:

Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum has issued a friendly challenge to mayors in Skiatook, Sand Springs, Sperry, Collinsville, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Glenpool, Jenks and Bixby to see which community can have the highest percentage of children enrolled in Tulsa City-County Library’s Summer Reading Program. The winning community will receive a special plaque to display for the year, as well as bragging rights for earning the distinction as a community of active readers. The readers at the Skiatook Library earned last year’s coveted plaque.

Thank you to the 2018 summer reading program presenting sponsors: Oklahoma Department of Libraries, Tulsa Library Trust, Tulsa’s Channel 8, TulsaKids Magazine, Raymond and Bessie Kravis Foundation, Williams, Tulsa Zoo, Gathering Place, Tulsa Drillers, Tulsa Roughnecks, Mazzio's and Tulsa State Fair. With their support, families can enjoy the free summer reading program and spend quality time together locally while young readers gain a sense of accomplishment.

That’s a lot of programs and prizes from so many great community supporters who believe in the power of literacy. Join us in expanding our imaginations, and creating a community of readers and future leaders.
