Our First Day of Summer

May 26, 2012 - 08:00 AM

It seemed only right that we have a picnic at the park to celebrate our first day of Summer. My best friend's mom, called Yaya by all the grandkids, invited us to Hunter Park for a special picnic and play time.

Hunter Park is located in South Tulsa on 91st Street between Sheridan and Yale. It backs up to the Creek Turnpike, with access to the Rivertrail. It's a blast from the past to me because I grew up right across the street. We used to walk to Hunter Park to play and get to the jogging trails.

Yaya put together some clever hot dog and tater tot skewers for us. How cute are they?

I was in charge of the fruit, so I made fruit kabobs! Alec cracked up every time I said the word "kabob," which just made me want to say it more. What is it about food on a stick that makes is so much more fun? Kids will eat just about anything if you put it on a stick and call it a [fill-in-the-blank] pop!

Near the picnic area is a huge slab with a labyrinth painted on it. The kids had a lot of fun working their way through the maze.

In the middle of the labyrinth is a really cool, huge rock. Alec is good at finding those kinds of rocks and yelling, "I'm king of the world!!"

The next highlight of our trip was riding on the motor bike Yaya brought for us!

Then we headed to the playground to work off some more energy. You can see in the far end of this picture the splash pad. It's not turned on for the summer just yet, but it's a good one on a hot Summer day!

Alec LOVES the swings. Thanks for pushing, Yaya!

Next, because we're a nature trails kind of a family, we headed into the woods. These are the woods that lead to the Creek Turnpike jogging trail, and also the Frisbee Golf Course.

Corrinne and Alec followed a squirrel for a while until we lost him.

We actually got to sneak a peak at some Frisbee golfers in action too! If you look closely you can see the Frisbee in the air!

I really love the Oklahoma landscape. Being in these woods reminds me of summer camp and exploring when I was a kid. I'm so glad our kids enjoy it as much as I do.

Hunter Park also has a fishing pond, jogging track, basketball courts and Biscuit Acres. Biscuit Acres Bark Park is one of Tulsa's only dog parks. I don't have dogs, but everyone I know with dogs makes their way out here on a regular basis. They're celebrating their anniversary next Saturday, June 2nd with hot dogs and festivities!

Happy Summer, and see you around town!
