A Surprising Trip to the Zoo
It's been a while since I took the littles to the Zoo. So when we completed the Summer Reading Program and earned our coupon book with free admission passes, I figured it was time to take the Library up on their offer!
Note to self: don't leave your coupon books in your husband's car and let him leave for work when you've already told the kids you're going to the Zoo! Oh well, you can't ever get enough of animals, so I went ahead and took them and paid full price and figured we'd use our coupons another day.
I love how they're excited every time we go, as if they've never been before. Alec can never help himself; he has to get a picture with the lion statue out front!
As soon as we walked in, we found the Helmerich Gem Dig, which is a relatively new exhibit. We have a rule that we only do one "extra" thing when we go, and we'd already paid for our train tickets, but the nice lady who was running it let us come in and look around. It's only $4 per person to dig through sand and rocks to find beautiful fossils and stones, and we will definitely do it next time!
We got on our way to explore the rest of the park. I love this exhibit about the Massai people in Kenya. I enjoy reading about their beliefs and culture, and the boys love pushing the buttons to hear their local music and singing. I think it's so cool that the Zoo doesn't just have animal exhibits, but there's an opportunity to learn about culture and other countries!
Right around the corner are the giraffes. Alec made sure to say (yell) hello to the boy giraffe, Samuru!
In case you've been avoiding the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum this summer for fear of melting away in the Summer heat, don't worry. There are lots of water misting fans throughout the park where you can stop and cool off, or play!
The thing we were most excited about was the new Sea Lion Cove. We haven't been to the Zoo since they opened it!
When you go underneath into the cove, there is a beautiful viewing window, and Briney and Dorsey love to show off their swimming to everyone watching.
We were truly in awe! We loved it in there so much, we went ahead and sat down and ate our sandwiches in the cool shade and cheered on the sea lions as they swam and dove and twisted in the beautiful water before us.
We came just in time for the Sea Lion show too! It was great to learn about the difference between seals and sea lions and watch all of the cool tricks these guys could do.
Then, the biggest surprise of the day was getting interviewed for Fox 23 News! It was so funny; a woman approached me and I said, "Oh, you look familiar, how do I know you?" She says, "I'm from Fox 23 News..." and I realized how silly I must have sounded. I'm sure she gets that all the time. Anyway, it's a little tiny blurb and nothing to write home about, but Aidan and Alec feel like superstars for having been on TV! You can watch the little snippet of us here (and even get a glimpse of my supercool fanny pack):

There's plenty of Summer left, friends! Get out and enjoy the animals and the adventure, and who knows, maybe you'll end up TV stars like us!
See you around town!
