Common Symptoms of Learning Related Vision Problems

At the Oklahoma Vision Development Center, we treat the visual side of learning.  Often children are labeled as having ADD or Dyslexia, but it is actually a Learning Related Vision Problem.  A Learning Related Vision Problem is a vision problem which can’t be fixed with glasses alone and is interfering with your child’s ability to learn. 

Some of the common symptoms of a Learning Related Vision Problem (LRVP) are:

·     Frequently loses place while reading

·     Better verbally than when he/she reads

·     Bright in everything except school

·     Reverses letters and words

·     Rubs eyes or tilts head while reading

·     Math much better than reading

If you are noticing these symptoms in your child, it is a good idea to get a Developmental Vision Evaluation.  A Developmental Vision Evaluation tests visual processing, auditory processing, and tracking skills.  At the end of the testing the doctor has a clear picture of the patient’s entire visual pathway and is able to give you a recommendation the same day.

The most common treatment for a Learning Related Vision Problem is vision therapy.  Vision therapy is like physical therapy for your eyes and eye-brain training.  At the Oklahoma Vision Development Center our vision therapy program consists of three areas which are eye tracking, eye teaming, and visual processing skills. The program typically takes 4-6 months to complete, and parents usually start noticing changes at school half way through the program after their child has developed improved eye movement and visual processing skills.
