Baby Veronica

Like most of you, I've been following the Baby Veronica case. I've been following through the eyes of a Native American and a mother. I've felt for the biological father, I've worried that the tribe would try and take it into their own hands and it would become violent, I've seen the adoptive mother's puffy, tired, pleading eyes longing to hold the baby girl that she fell in love with. It has been a horrible situation. There is no good ending. One day Veronica will find out all about it and I hope that she can see how much she was loved and be comforted by that. Lastnight, her adoptive parents took her from her biological father. At moments it looked like it was going to get ugly. But as the King Solomon story goes, her biological father conceded and...

5 Suggestions for New Moms

R ecently I was at a get-together where my children were the oldest ones there (3 1/2 and 15 months). Most of them were newborns or still pretty young. It's a very odd feeling when your baby isn't the baby. She looked so big! And usually I'm trying to protect her from the big kids, not the other way around. The new moms were discussing new mom things - mastitis, sleeping through the night, going back to work guilt, etc. I sat there trying to stop myself from sounding like a know-it-all because I was so there only a short time ago. Being a new mom can be so scary and you can be so vulnerable. On the drive home I was thinking what I wish I would have known when my firstborn was little. Here's my list: 1) Your pediatrician is not the end all/ be all. If...

Kids' Stuff at the New Librarium

From what I understand, they're completely renovating the downtown Library and the newly opened Librarium (1110 S. Denver) is holding down the fort until it's completed. So, of course, we had to check it out. I do adore a fun and FREE after school activity. Otherwise, I'll head home and try to fend off turning on "just one show" for the rest of the day. I've been really trying to keep the screen time to one hour a day - but that's for a different post, now isn't it. So back to the Librarium. It's pretty cool. The building (I think it used to be a Homeland?) is just one big room. You can completely see one side from the other. It has a whole different feel from your typical library. It's kind of a new-age, hipper library. Which for...

Make Panda Love, Not War

Look, I'm not trying to get political with this blog post. As a mom, sometimes I have to turn off the news and focus on what's in front of me. It's so hard to go from seeing some of the horrible images I have seen lately, and then go play hide-and-seek or put on a puppet show. I'm not trying to belittle any situation, I'm just trying to keep my head in a place that allows me to be the best mom I can be. And if you are looking for something to make you smile, check out these adorable panda twins that have recently made their debut. I hope you all have a good weekend and realize how lucky you are to live in this great country.

Trekking Turkey Mountain

Trekking Turkey Mountain

We recently got back from a trip to Colorado where we caught the hiking bug. And while there is no place like the Rocky Mountains, you can still find a few places in the Tulsa area where you can atleast pretend for a little bit. One of those spots is Turkey Mountain. When I first moved to Tulsa about seven years ago, people would tell me all sorts of stories about Turkey Mountain - and none of them were positive. I won't go into details. But that (if it ever were) is no longer the case. It's now an awesome (and quite crowded) spot for the active. The parking lot was almost full at 9 a.m. on Sunday! There are nice, new bathrooms and clearly marked trails. There was even a troubador type fellow singing and playing the guitar. And as an aside, I've been...

My Not So Friendly Flyer

My Not So Friendly Flyer

Oy! Aaah! Sigh! My family just got back from an amazing trip to Colorado. It was epic and I am having a really hard time transition back to above 80 degrees and the real world. So the actual vacation was amazing. But the traveling party, oh the traveling part, was very, very, very bad. Turns out that the worst time to get on an airplane with a child is when they're between 14 months, 13 days old and 14 months, 20 days old. In case you were wondering. We went to Glenwood Springs, Colorado which is about a 15 hour drive. Far too long for my two little ones to be in the car. So, their dad drove the car with our brother-in-law then picked us up in Vail. Perfect, right? NO. NO. NO. It was not perfect. Whether driving would have been better, I'll never...

Visiting the Tulsa Botanic Garden

Visiting the Tulsa Botanic Garden

I've been hearing about the Tulsa Botanic Garden for a couple of months, and decided it was time for us to go check it out. My husband is a major garden nerd, so it didn't take much convincing. Seriously, we are the youngest people at all of the early morning garden shows by atleast 40 years. It's kind of one of my favorite things about him. Also, we are spending a week in Colorado in August, and I wanted to try out a hike with my 1-year-old strapped into my new Baby Ergo. We also brought the B.O.B. stroller because our son hasn't been feeling 100% and I didn't think that he would be able to make the 2 mile hike. The Baby Ergo was perfect and I can't believe I've waited this long to get one. My 1-year-old likes me ALOT right now, so she's happy to...

Confusion Over Ear Tubes

My son has had the same set of ear tubes since he was about 15 months old. He's now 3 1/2, so it's shocking that they're both still in and doing their job. Before the tubes he had chronic ear infections, water in his ears and balance problems. It was also affecting his speech. Our doctor said it was basically like he was living under water. I'm not one to over medicate my kids, and I definitely did not want to put my toddler under anesthesia, but I have an amazing pediatrician and she strongly suggested getting the procedure done. After doing my own research and getting a second opinion, we decided that it was a good option for him. Since getting tubes in and adenoids out, he has had a total of TWO ear infections. Also, it was amazing how much better his...

Visiting the Tulsa Children's Museum

We visited the new Tulsa Children's Museum (TCM) yesterday and it. is. the. BOMB. First of all, I've never been to Owen Park and what a gem! You know, sometimes, I'll go to these places and get so mad at myself for not knowing about them. I've been in Tulsa now for almost 8 years, and there's just so many great spots I haven't hit up yet. I feel a summertime theme emerging. Anyways, the park is great and I want to go back to spend more time there, but back to the TCM. It's a little off-the-beaten-path, so Mapquest before you go. Getting lost after you leave somewhere is always ok because everyone is tired, but a 3-year-old in the backseat asking "are we there yet?" over and over and OVER, can really drive me out of my mind. If you...
