Tulsa Community Centers' Swimming Schedule

05/05/14

Tulsa Community Centers' Swimming Schedule

I live in midtown and I'm a huge fan of the Whiteside Recreation Center. I'm a regular at Bikes n' Balls with my toddler and we are off-and-on with their gymnastics lessons. While I was there last week, I picked up their summer swimming lessons schedule and thought I'd share it with you all. The prices for these lessons are very affordable, and while I've never actually participated in their swim activities, if it's like the rest of their stuff, it'll be good. It also includes some other community centers around town.      This is just a small sampling of affordable activities Whiteside offers for all ages. Click here to check out their website.

Summer Swimming: I'm in deep!

Summer Swimming: I'm in deep!

This past weekend we went to a friend's house for a Crawfish Boil. If you're looking for a cool party idea, check into it - it was my first and it was tons o' fun. They had a swimming pool with a heater, so it was just warm enough that keeping the kids out of the pool was not an option.  My oldest, still in floaties, is at a good age where I don't really have to get in the pool with him. He'll be starting swimming lessons soon, and although I'd never trust him 100%, he grasps the concept of water safety. My youngest, who will be two next month, is not at any sort of good age for any sort of water activity. The first (and almost as frightening) reason is because I have to get in the pool. Meaning I have to be in a bathing suit. In front of people....

Mmm Hops, Hanson, Beer = Mind Blown

Mmm Hops, Hanson, Beer = Mind Blown

OK. Let's take a glance back to the mid-90s when little Abby was deep into the tween life - rocking Doc Martens, smelled of Abercrombie perfume, had horrible hair ala an addiction to Sun In, and had a poster of Taylor Hanson in her room. Those were the days. And yet I had no idea that someday I would be living in the very same town as the three Hanson brothers, and that unlike most child-stars, they would actually become functional (atleast that I know of) and dare I say MORE attractive adults. Surely, all the 30ish women in Tulsa have their own Hanson brother sighting stories. While I've never actually seen them, atleast three of my friends have (and a few friends of a friend), and according to them, they are, in fact, just as dreamy as I have them imagined...

Grumpy's Garden Isn't So Grumpy

Grumpy's Garden Isn't So Grumpy

Sometimes I get tired of going to the park. It seems like we get into a little bit of a park rut. So, I've been trying to do things that will be entertaining for the kids and me. And I really just need to get out more, in general. I go to the same places over and over, when there's so much to be seen in our area. Separately, I'm looking for a chiminea. There's nothing like throwing some pinonwood in a chiminea on a nice spring Sunday, while the kids play in the backyard and I may or may not have a nice glass of vino (or two). So, I pass by Grumpy's Garden on my way to work everyday and decided we'd finally check it out. And turns out, it's kind of magical. First of all, I'm a sucker for small, local places and this is definitely one of...

The CAN Superhero Challenge

The CAN Superhero Challenge

Superheroes are celebrities at my house. I've had multiple conversations about whether Flash is faster than Superman, or if Batman is stronger than the Hulk. Sound familiar? If so, I'm about to make your day. On Sunday, March 30th the Child Abuse Network (CAN) is holding their first-ever Superhero Challenge. The challenge will include age-appropriate obstacle courses, refreshments, etc. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero. Let me set this up for you - a bunch of little kids running around dressed up like superheroes. It's going to be epic! Like their Facebook page, and get signed up!

On the Streets of Phildelphia

On the Streets of Phildelphia

Hello? Hello? Is anybody out there? Are any of the 5 followers I have still following me since I haven't posted in months? Mom, are you even still there? Like most of you, I've been drowing lately. I just can't seem to gain traction in my life. I just keep running around putting out fires, but not actually getting anything done. You know the whole fold the laundry, but never put it up situation. And then you get hit in the face with a snowball, or in a work at home mom's situation, a snow day. Look, I'm a winter person (or more so not a bathing suit person), but this winter can just MOVE ALONG. And then last weekend we had a magazine conference in Phildelphia. So, I signed up a couple of months ago thinking it would be fun, and besides, it was months away,...

Blitz United Youth Academy Open Skills Training

Blitz United Youth Academy Open Skills Training

This will be short and sweet, but I just wanted to let you all know about a Wednesday night gem. If you're like me, paying introduction fees and committing to long-term extracurricular activities is a deal breaker. My kids have to love it before I'll drop a $60 intro fee for a 4-year-old anything. Enter, Blitz United's opens skills training night! It's every Wednesday, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Soccer City. It covers almost every age. My niece is 9, my nephew is 5 and my son is 4, and they're all split up according to skill level. The best part...it's $5/ kid and there's no commitment, or sign-up. You just show up with your kid and $5, steer them to the field and they're off for an hour of skills training with some pretty awesome instructors. Here...

The Mother Zone: My First Stomach Virus Experience

The Mother Zone: My First Stomach Virus Experience

You know, sometimes in motherhood, you hit this point where you get in a zone. It's the point after you've hit your limit. You've already cracked. It's like an extra gear that you can hit when you think you've exhausted all your resources. I've only been in this zone a few times - when my kids were newborns and sleep deprivation hit, when my oldest was very ill in the hospital, and most recently when a stomach virus took over my whole existence. It started with me on New Year's day. Let's be honest, at first I thought that my NYE cocktails were the cause. I struggled throughout the day, but as you mothers know, we press on. It was one of those days when I just watched the clock willing it to move faster. Finally, bedtime was here. But I was shortly...

5 Reasons Why Snow Blows (Atleast with Small Children)

5 Reasons Why Snow Blows (Atleast with Small Children)

Look, I'm not going to complain this whole blog post. I'm actually looking back fondly on all of the extra time I was able to spend with my children since this whole snow mess happened. And by extra time, I mean every minute of every day. And by every minute of every day, I mean it because my oldest sleeps in our bed and my youngest has demanded I sleep in her crib and pat her back until she falls asleep lately. I was able to go solo to a matinee on Sunday, but spent the whole time worried about my children because, well, I'm a mom and we're just twisted that way. So, anyways, after the first initial excitement of the snow - after the cozy fire goes out - after that first five minutes in the snow wears off, here is the reality of why snow blows. 1)...

Bargain Christmas Cards

Bargain Christmas Cards

One of my favorite things about the holidays is getting Christmas cards in the mail. I actually have saved them all the past five years, and during the holidays, I leave them in a basket on my coffee table for browsing. It's fun to see photos of my friends transition from coupledom to dogs to baby to more babies. Even though I love the whole tradition, it is just one more expense that comes with the holidays, and I have to admit, I'm not the best bargain shopper - especially when I'm in a hurry. I need to be and I aspire to be, but I can't quite get organized enough to do it. BUT, I have a good friend who has a gift for it and she sends them my way - bless her. So, I wanted to share with you guys a website that has some great deals. It's hip2save.com...
